Another Distraction

I've been thinking about how I want to finish some of the flimsies on my UFO list. One of them is a really old log cabin quilt I started in approximately 2002. Back in 2020, I actually finished the blocks and assembled them into a large quilt, but I didn't like it well enough to pay somebody to quilt it for me, so I hung it in my closet and forgot about it.

This year is the year I will finally finish it. Since getting the long arm, I decided I don't actually want to make a bunch of big quilts I don't need; they're expensive to finish once you add the backing and batting so I thought I would partially disassemble it and make four small quilts, but then I had an idea: My mother said her favorite color is purple and it occurred to me I could take this quilt apart and make a purple twin-size quilt for her.

Over New Years' weekend, we binged Lord of the Rings and I spent the time taking this quilt apart. I finished before the second movie was over. I then ironed the blocks and put the purple ones on the wall and the green ones in a project tub for later in the year.

If I had designed a quilt from scratch for my mother, this is not the one I would have made, but I want to find a good home for these blocks and this should do as a quickie gift for her.

I spent today assembling the blocks and I'm nearly done with the flimsy. I still want to add two borders, but I haven't decided which fabrics to use yet.

I'm also thinking about making a pieced backing for this one. It would be nice to use up the print I used in the center of the blocks.

I guess because it's nearly Tuesday, I should come up with my task list for the week:
  • Finish the Purple Log Cabin flimsy
  • Make backing for this log cabin flimsy
  • Work on backings for both Arlington Square flimsies
  • Get at least one of the above projects quilted!
  • Start working on Blue RSC blocks
  • Figure out Chilhowie fabrics
  • Cut out pieces for Aged Elegance bonus crib quilt

I'm linking up with Monday Musings and Tuesday ToDo.

  1. Sharon the original quilt was beautiful, but I like it with just the purple as well. Congratulations on almost finishing a UFO and your Mom will be lucky to receive this beauty. 😉

  3. I love the purples together, and the log cabin blocks look stunning. I'm getting ready to do a purple (eggplant-ish) quilt for my DIL. I think that center fabric is lovely. Lucky Mom!

  4. Good for you, to get that UFO out of the closet! I’m sure your mom will br “tickled pink” to quote my mom! Golly, I miss her! I’ll be looking to see the quilt you make from the green log cabins! Log cabin quilts are favorites of mine.

    1. Thanks. I will probably take the rest of the green blocks and make two smaller quilts from them. It's nice to have a ready supply of lap quilts to gift to family and friends.

    1. Most of the log cabin projects I make now are designed by Judy Martin. I love her complicated log cabin patterns. LOL

  7. Sometimes quilts have to brew a bit before you figure out what to do with them. The two color was pretty, but I love the purple layout!

  8. Sharon, it is beautiful. I don't know why you didn't think it was worthy of a paid quilter. I also am so shocked you picked all those blocks apart to make it smaller. That was a chore since it now doesn't have green in it. Wow! Your mom is a lucky person to receive it!
Piecefulwendy is so right when she said we have to let a quilt brew for a spell before we figure out what to do with them. Another quilt friend of mine, Sharon Schamber, said once that she waits for the quilt to tell her what it needs or wants. I fully believe it.

    1. By the time I'd finished this project I'd actually finished a number of more advanced quilt patterns so this one seemed pretty basic to me. It wasn't a bad quilt, I just didn't want to spend $200 having it quilted. LOL

  9. Wow that's a mammoth task unpicking your original quilt but it makes sense to create something that you are happy with. The back looks great too, and I hope the quilting continues to go well!

  10. Unpicking is NOT my idea of fun! But at least you had some fun movie time while doing it! I love the purple log cabin and look forward to seeing it complete! Thanks for linking up with Monday Musings!
