More Quilting Gigs

I've done a couple of paid quilting projects since my last post.

I quilted a quilt for a friend who is just starting out on her quilting journey. She made this quilt without a pattern and was just winging it. It was pretty amazing for no pattern, but her borders were really wonky; I actually had to baste down a pleat. I wasn't 100% happy with it, but short of taking off the borders and putting them back on, it wasn't really something I could fix. I did the best I could.
Here, she sent me a photo of it once it was bound.
My friend chose the Orbit E2E and tan thread.

I also finished a baby quilt yesterday for another client, Joy. She wanted a bold dense design.
I used the Color E2E from Anne Bright Designs. I stitched it out in Dark Pink maxi-lock thread. This was a fun quilt.

Jade Garden Quilted!

It is done!! It is an oversize queen quilt (96"x96") and too large for one person to hold it up. (I do hope I'll be able to get a better photo sometime soon.)

For the most part, I followed my quilting plan. These pantographs are primarily from the Spring Sunrise Set by Christy Dillon, though I edited one of them slightly to better fit my design.

I spent about three days quilting it. Those blocks were really large! They were actually as big as I could fit in my stitching area and I had to rotate it on the frame all 4 ways to be able to stitch it out. The center block was too large and I had to stitch it out by pausing the long arm and forwarding it to stitch out the last portion, as shown in this Handiquilter video. I do also wish I hadn't skewed the outer borders, but despite that, it still turned out pretty well.

For this project, I used Quilter's Dream Blend 70/30 batting because I was hoping it would breathe a little better during hot weather. I used Glide thread in the Mulberry color. It is extremely difficult to see the quilting because the fabric is so busy, but I did take a few detail photos.

I'm so happy it is nearly finished; I just need to sew on the binding. I'll set it aside for now until I make the next batch of quilt labels.

Jade Garden Quilting Plan

Our weather has been hot this week and my quilting "studio" is upstairs where it has gotten uncomfortably hot, so I've spent the past couple of days in our cool basement working on a number of quilting plans. I think this is the one I'm going to go with once it cools down enough to work upstairs.

These pantographs are primarily from the Spring Sunrise Set by Christy Dillon.

I'm hoping I have enough fabric for the backing but I haven't taken the time to check yet.

Paid Quilting Gig

I just finished another quilting project for a paying customer. I don't do many these days as I don't do anything to market myself, but occasionally someone hears of my services through word of mouth.

This is a large 100"x82" quilt. It was quilted with Abbie 3 from Christy Dillon. The quilt is very bright. Really, there is no thread color that would have shown the stitching very well.

Recent Finishes

I guess I got so busy with sifting and selling off my excess fabric bolts I totally forgot to post my recent finishes. Many I've already posted progress, but I never posted the final photos. I'd been trying to clear some UFOs before I start new projects.

This was the quick Scot's Plaid pattern made with a large-scale Hawaiian fabric I fussy cut for the squares.

This is the Broken Bricks pattern with the leftover Hawaiian fabrics scraps. Even the border is scraps. I quilted it with Hibiscus Tea by A Bit Orange. And the batting is made up of scraps of Quilter's Dream Green.

This is the Nine Patch Twirl I didn't particularly like last year. I still don't love it, but it has grown on me now that it has been quilted.

All of these quilts are in the pile to find a new home. If someone in the family doesn't claim them in the next year or two, they will ultimately get donated to Comfort Quilts.

Another Quick Finish

Sometime in the past few years someone from the Northwest Quilter's Guild gave me a big bag of scraps and in it there was a pile of these WOF strips.

There were also quite a few of approx. 4-inch square blocks as well. I had to do a bunch of trimming to actually make them a uniform size. (I would not be surprised if that is why they originally ended up in the scrap bag.)

I had times when I questioned myself why I was spending time on this project. These are not fabrics I ever would have chosen, but not everyone has the same taste (at least that is what I keep telling myself).

I don't know what the pattern is called, but I've been calling it Basketweave.

I almost always use Quilter's Dream Green batting. I quilted it with Christy Dillon's Harrison E2E. I used a light purple MaxiLock thread because I hoped it would bring out the purple in the light fabric, but it is almost invisible on the front. It does show up on the back.

I'm actually proud of the binding as this was my first flange binding and I made it from the leftover strips, which weren't wide enough. I found this Flange Binding Tutorial helpful.

Finally Made a Quilt

My husband and I have spent the past few months sifting our garage and storage areas and decluttering. In June, we had a garage sale and then donated virtually everything leftover. The house is looking much tidier at the moment.

Last week, I had a couple of paid long arm quilting gigs so it finally spurred me to spend time in my sewing room. There was a pile of bright hibiscus and coordinating fabrics stashed under my long arm so I gathered them up and decided to make something with them. Finally. They've probably been there for two years.

I decided to fussy-cut hibiscus flowers into 4.5" squares then I just made a quick Scot's Plaid block pattern. It was a quick one-day project. I had been planning to add a border with the hibiscus fabric, but it is a large scale print and I decided it wouldn't look good sliced into strips.

I long-arm quilted it with Christy Dillon's Hibiscus Hideaway pantograph with Dark Rose Maxi-Lock thread. As usual, I used Quilter's Dream Green batting.

Of course, once I had the scraps spread all over my table, I couldn't resist working on another Broken Bricks quilt for the Friday Night Sew-In. That is my favorite scrappy quilt pattern. I'll probably finish it this weekend.

Fall Foliage Spectacular Quilted

I am delighted to have finished the quilting! I'm quite happy with how this one has turned out. This pattern is from Judy Martin's Cookies 'n' Quilts book and I used fabrics that coordinate with my living room furnishings.

Since I couldn't find an edge-to-edge design I liked, I created this block design by combining two different triangle blocks. I think it worked pretty well. I had tried a number of different triangles with that leaf design, but this was the one Jeff liked best, and the quilt was for him.

Heart Block P2P Triangle 01

Chloe's Garden Triangle 2

The small sashing design I created by snipping the leaf out of the garden triangle and slightly editing it.

I used Quilter's Dream Green batting, made with recycled soda bottles, as I feel it's the least I can do for the environment. And I used Madeira Aeroquilt thread in a dark green.

Chilhowie Quilted!

Chilhowie is quilted!

I do think this one needs a label so I'll be setting it aside until the next time I do a batch of labels, and then I'll finish binding it. The backing I ordered turned out to be perfect, so I'm glad I took a chance on it.

I'm quite pleased with how this one turned out.

I quilted this quilt primarily with Christy Dillon's Orange Blossom set, but the original plan done entirely with these blocks felt like too many of the same flowers so I substituted in the alternate blocks with Donna Kleinke's Lady of the Lake 2 Block 1.

As usual, I used Quilters Dream Green batting and MaxiLock thread in the Lauren color. I had intended to use Glide thread, but I just didn't find a color I liked among my supply.

Easy Street Finished...and Gifted

In usual fashion, I was in such a rush to get the Easy Street quilt finished that I didn't get good photos. It was really big and my husband didn't have enough reach to hold it up for me.

It was gifted right after Christmas when my husband drove down to see his family.

My brother loved it and I'm happy to have finished a UFO.

I used the Quilter's Dream Green batting and lavender Glide thread. I quilted it with Anne Bright's Feather Garden. It's a beautiful pantograph, but it took so long to quilt. It was more than an hour for each row, plus the time to advance the quilt and fiddle with realigning the design.

Nine Patch Twirl Quilted

I finally got the Nine Patch Twirl on the long arm today and quilted it up. I decided to try a fun pantograph for this one.

I like the way this one turned out. I used inexpensive Navy MaxiLock serger thread and polyester batting scraps.

The pantograph is the Color E2E from Anne Bright Designs. It's a really large design but was fun.

Mini Retreat

At the end of July, a friend came to stay with us for a week, and we dedicated three full days to a sewing marathon. I was incredibly productive!

During that time, I managed to finish quilting the last two quilts for Quilts Beyond Borders. I didn't get great photos of the quilts as I was rushing to get through them so I could quilt a quilt for my friend.

Quilted with Zen Roses 1

I also tackled the binding on the last of my quilts. Handling large quilts in my sewing space always feels like a bit of a wrestling match, which might explain why I often procrastinate on finishing them. But now, I’m thrilled to report that I’m completely caught up!

Last Saturday, we also attended a local guild fabric sale where I picked up some small pieces of fabric. By then I had finished my binding project so these finds prompted me to whip up a quick scrap quilt. I opted for the familiar Broken Bricks pattern. I considered trying something new, but the ease of this pattern—no need for complex calculations or meticulous matching—made it the perfect choice.

I quilted this one with Modern Stars E2E (rounded edges).

I've nearly finished sewing on the binding on this one. It should be finished tomorrow.

Some Unpaid Gigs

Last week, I happily took on six quilts from Quilts Beyond Borders, thanks to the coordinator, Susan Schmidt, who graciously dropped them off. This charity provides a 108"-wide piece of backing, wide batting, and two lap-size quilts for each project. If your frame isn't large enough to handle them side-by-side, you quilt one first and then the other right below it.

I've spent the past few days working on the first four quilts. It's been a great chance to test out some new pantographs and use up those partially-full bobbins.

Quilted with Avril E2E.

I'm a little disappointed with this next one. The thread color blended too well with the fabric, making the pattern hard to discern. A different thread color, perhaps a light blue, might have highlighted the design better.
Woodlands B2B

I was tempted to use a nautical-themed pantograph for this shark row quilt, but unfortunately since I was stitching it on it's side, it would have looked odd stitched perpendicular to the fabric's rows.
Quilted with Marion Rounded E2E.

The last quilt in this batch proved quite tricky. It was serged with mismatched seams and uneven edges—truly wonky, as we say in quilting. Despite its imperfections, I continued working on it because I had started the batch and these quilts are destined for refugees who might just be thankful for a warm blanket, regardless of its flaws.

I quilted this one with the Florence B2B because it had no backstitching and
would be pretty forgiving of my fabric-easing efforts.

This quilt required significant effort to manage, as it wouldn't lie flat. I had to carefully guide the long-arm to ease the fabric and avoid pleating, even sewing down a pleat along one edge to keep it square. It was the most labor-intensive quilt of the lot, but the outcome was satisfactory. I hope it brings warmth and comfort to its new owner.

I still have two more quilts to finish, but I'm taking a short break to recharge.
